New bylaw supports community presentation and accountability

Council has approved the Community Standards Bylaw, establishing clear standards of presentation and accountability within Strathcona County.

Overall, the bylaw addresses community standard topics, including:

  • Building, yard and fence maintenance
  • Wood burning appliances and nuisance smoke
  • Nuisance and unsightly properties
  • Excessive noise
  • Graffiti
  • Storing construction materials and debris
  • Parking on private property
  • Symbols of hate

The new bylaw addresses noise, nuisance/unsightly premises, and sidewalk clearing; meaning three previous bylaws will be repealed and integrated into the Community Standards Bylaw.

Informed by a public survey and hearing feedback, the Community Standards Bylaw comes into effect immediately.

While enforcement fines may be an option under the bylaw, community members are encouraged to work together to resolve disputes before elevating complaints for investigation. Visit strathcona.ca/GoodNeighbour for tips on how to resolve conflicts.
