Public Member Appointments

Each year Council invites residents to apply for public member terms on Council Committees and Boards as well as a number of external Committees.

Accessibility Advisory Committee
To identify and minimize barriers in municipal facilities, public spaces, programs or services and to promote equitable participation by persons with disabilities in the community. This committee requires members with disabilities and/or experience in providing services or assistance to persons with disabilities.

Agricultural Service Board
Considers agricultural matters and makes recommendations to County Council. Preference may be given to agricultural producers.

Assessment Review Board
A quasi-judicial body which hears complaints against assessments and makes decisions respecting these complaints. Preference will be given to individuals with previous experience with quasi-judicial or decision-making boards and/or applicable experience in assessment, law, economics and/or finance.

2013 Celebrations Committee
Advises Council regarding the planning of a 2013 community anniversary celebration that also honours the military.

Community Futures Elk Island Region Board
A board that provides business assistance to improve the local economy within the boundaries of the counties of Lamont, Two Hills, Minburn and Strathcona. Rural representation required.

Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee
A committee to assist in the implementation of the strategic objectives contained in the Economic Development and Tourism Strategy and guide Strathcona County's activities in the area of business attraction, retention and growth. Consideration will be given to applicants who have experience in the following 3 sectors: Tourism; Heavy Industry, Energy; Small Business.

Energy Exploration Committee
A committee to advise Council on issues related to oil and gas exploration, extraction, and pipelines in the community. Familiarity of rural matters related to oil and gas exploration will be considered an asset.

Environmental Advisory Committee
A committee that assists in advising Council on issues related to the environment and in the creation of environmental policies and initiatives.

Festival Place Advisory Committee
Reviews fundraising opportunities for Festival Place, and works with administration to ensure a vision for Festival Place that meets community needs and continues to provide excellent and diverse opportunities.

Finance Advisory Committee
Advises Council on matters relating to the business plan and budgeting process, and the review and development of financial policies, reviews and long-range financial plans.

Information and Volunteer Centre Board of Directors
Sets policy and oversees the operation of an innovative centre that connects the community to information and volunteer resources.

Heritage Advisory Committee
Provides information and advice to Council on matters regarding historic resources, municipal heritage policies and programs.

Library Board (External Board)
A policy governance board responsible for the operation of Strathcona County Library, including the Bookmobile.

Permanent Art Collection Advisory Committee
Obtains art for the Permanent Art Collection of Strathcona County and makes recommendations on how and where the art is displayed. Preference may be given to representatives from organized visual arts groups and/or individual artists from Strathcona County.

RCMP Community Advisory Committee (External Committee)
Brings forward public concerns with regard to police service. Listens, evaluates and provides input into planned police programs.

River Valley Alliance Advisory Committee (External Committee)
The River Valley Alliance (RVA) is comprised of seven member municipalities, and works to protect, preserve and enhance the North Saskatchewan River Valley for the year-round enjoyment of citizens and visitors to the Alberta Capital Region.

Seniors Advisory Committee
To advise Council regarding seniors' needs, issues, and concerns, and ways to enhance the quality of life for seniors in our community. This committee requires members aged 55 and over.

Strathcona Youth Justice Committee (External Committee)
Administers the Extrajudicial Sanctions Program to young offenders, affording them the opportunity to make amends for their offence with restorative justice practices. Works under the direction of the Solicitor General through Correctional Services. Involves cooperation within the community, the police and community services agencies.

Please note: Applicants must submit 3 references and a criminal background and child welfare check with their application and prior to their work on the committee.

Subdivision and Development Appeal Board
Hears appeals regarding the decisions of the Subdivision Authority and Development Authority. Preference will be given to individuals who have previous experience with quasi-judicial or decision-making boards; and/or applicable experience in law, planning, management. Youth Advisory Committee
To provide a mechanism for direct input and interaction between youth and Council for the purpose of facilitating discussion regarding youth needs and issues.
