Public crime-mapping tool now available online

As part of its ongoing commitment to foster an environment for safe communities, Strathcona County has launched an RCMP crime map that provides residents with information about reported crimes in Strathcona County.

The online crime mapping feature is an innovative example of how Strathcona County is working with the community to be leaders in public safety through partnerships, innovation and excellence. The interactive map can be accessed online at strathcona.ca/safety.

The online map features a listing of crime types in Strathcona County, including: theft from/of a motor vehicle, theft over/under $5,000, Break and Enter, Mischief and Missing Persons. Note, crimes taking place at private residences will not be listed at the exact address; rather the mapped location will be placed in the proximity of the crime. The RCMP crime map is refreshed with current data over a 14-day window.

This mapping project allows the RCMP to increase inter-agency communication and criminal intelligence information-sharing with its partners. It also encourages residents to participate in crime prevention strategies, such as reporting suspicious persons or activity, in an effort to be the extra set of eyes and ears for police in their communities. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the police at 780-449-0170.

The RCMP crime mapping project is one part of the County’s continued efforts to address crime and traffic trends in the community.

Strathcona County RCMP and Enforcement Services continue to examine crime and traffic trends as part of their on-going education, prevention and enforcement work. For example, RCMP created a new crime analyst position to ensure officers are trained and aware of best practices. Based on the crime analyst’s data, Enforcement Services developed a rural crime reduction strategy that details patrols in designated rural areas. These patrols are part of on-going efforts to provide a visible police presence to deter criminal activity and build relationships with the community.

In addition, Strathcona County RCMP and Enforcement Services have established in-house training in forensic child interviewing techniques, as well as establishing strong, collaborative relationships with local partners including Family and Community Services and Saffron when dealing with crimes against persons. The Community Policing Unit continues to raise awareness about criminal activity, through presentations and community visits, as part of overall efforts to educate and encourage residents to report any suspicious activity.
