The Slab returns this summer!

The Slab, a popular youth-specific outdoor gathering space, will be soon available for hanging out, messing around and geeking out over the summer months in Strathcona County. The Slab is intended for youth aged 12 to 17.

Intended as a casual gathering space for youth, The Slab is designed to incorporate the ideas of HOMAGO (Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out) which have been used in youth spaces ranging from Calgary to California.

This approach creates an inclusive and fun space for youth – a place where youth can interact with music, art, board games, and photography. Youth are welcome to just be their natural fun-loving selves. The Slab was designed through different engagement sessions throughout the county, where youth were asked what they thought about community and what they would like to see in a space for them. The Slab aims to help inform how youth connect to the community, and how youth can be a part of creating an inclusive and connected community for everyone.

Strathcona County youth are invited to bring their friends to the launch of The Slab on June 25 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the outdoor East Plaza of the Community Centre (2001 Sherwood Drive, Sherwood Park) and on June 26 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ardrossan Curling Rink (80 First Avenue, Ardrossan, AB).

As of June 25, The Slab will be open in two locations throughout the summer (weather permitting):

• Tuesdays: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in East Plaza of the Community Centre
• Wednesdays: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ardrossan Recreation Complex
• Thursdays: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the East Plaza of the Community Centre
• Fridays: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the East Plaza of the Community Centre

The Slab wraps up on August 23, 2019.
