Strathcona County Victim Services recruiting volunteers

Strathcona County Victim Services is now accepting applications for its Volunteer Advocate positions. Volunteer Advocates are an important part of Victim Services’ role in supporting victims of crime and tragic circumstances.

“Victim Services volunteers are incredibly compassionate people who want to help others through difficult times.” said Frances Yarbrough, Unit leader, Strathcona County Victim Services. “Our volunteers’ gifts of time, non-judgment and empathy are invaluable to our community’s overall health and well-being.”

Because of the nature of their work, Victim Services provides an extensive training program about the wide variety of cases involving Volunteer Advocates. Volunteer Advocates provide immediate emotional and practical support, while also freeing up time for police, fire and paramedic responders to do their jobs. Volunteers respond to calls 365 days-a-year as part of an experienced-person team that is on-call for assigned 12-hour shifts. All volunteers receive ongoing training opportunities.

“Our volunteers have often told us that it is their privilege to assist people who are going through difficulties, and the experience is both challenging and rewarding. They also appreciate all the training that we offer that can transfer to other careers and overall life goals,” said Yarbrough.

Strathcona County Victim Services has been operating in the County for over 30 years, assisting thousands of people during a time of crisis.
