Creating a bike friendly Strathcona County

With summer in full swing, more cyclists will be out on County roads, trails and pathways. Strathcona County is asking both motorists and cyclists to look out for each other and make this summer safe and fun for everyone. Tips and safety information are online at strathcona.ca/bikesafety.

Road safety

Cyclists have the right to ride on County and provincial highway roads and shoulders, and motorists play an important role in protecting cyclists by passing safely and at a distance.

The County’s local trails are safest for children and recreational cyclists. All cyclists under 18 are required by law to wear a helmet, and adults are recommended to wear one as well. Cyclists can protect their and others’ safety by using a bell to pass, obeying all signs, using hand signals and dismounting to walk across intersections.

All cyclists must use head and taillights if biking at night or in reduced visibility.

Bike repair stations

To help keep bikes in ride-ready shape, free cycling repair and pump stations are open for cyclist use at the Community Centre, Millennium Place and Emerald Hills Sports Pavilion. 

Getting around the County

The County is home to over 280 km of trails open to cyclists, and many are near local businesses and shopping, making it easy to bike, dine, walk and shop (strathcona.ca/adventure) in the County. View the trail map online or pick up a map at locations listed at strathcona.ca/cyclemap.

Cyclists needing public transportation are welcome to use bike racks mounted on the front of transit buses for local and commuter routes.

Bike Patrol Unit

Enforcement Services’ Bike Patrol Unit returns this summer. Peace Officers will be cycling on Strathcona County roads and trails to promote safe cycling and motorist behaviour and hand out positive tickets to people practicing safe cycling. Unsafe cyclist/motorist interactions can be reported to the unit or by phone, 24 hours a day, at 780-467-7741.
