Summer exhibition at Gallery@501

Gallery@501 is pleased to present “We’ll Build a Palace Upon the Ruins” by Red Deer artist Jason Frizzell, on display from July 8 to August 20.

This exhibition features close to 60 small-scale sculptural works that continue a thematic exploration of transition, identity, denial and discovery. Frizzell constructs miniature scenes that combine references from popular culture, imagined environments and a mash-up of time periods and eras.

“Rusted hulks of machinery and architecture of unknown origin and function dwell alongside futuristic robots, spaceships, and domesticated (or at least well-trained) dinosaurs. The pieces describe a place where the concepts of past, present and future may overlap and coexist,” says artist Jason Frizzell.

Visitors will be intrigued to see behind the scenes of Frizzell’s creations in a partial recreation of his studio space in the Gallery. Frizzell’s miniature world can be explored on a deeper level through a touchable sensory kit that visitors can engage with, as well as larger views of the work on iPads for accessible viewing.

With subtle references to Mad Max, The Wizard of Oz, Planet of the Apes, The Flintstones and Stephen King, Frizzell has created three dimensional stories that will engage and intrigue all ages.

The public is also invited to a special opening reception and exhibition walk-through with Jason Frizzell on Thursday, July 14 at 7 p.m. This event and admission to Gallery@501 is free.
