Final tax increase comes in lower than expected

Strathcona County’s final combined tax increase for 2023 (including municipal, education, library, and Heartland Housing) is 2.9 per cent, lower than originally anticipated largely due to the provincial education tax staying steady and growth in the County.

That means the average single-family residential property assessed at $448,000 would see an approximate increase of $90 annually, or $7.50 monthly.

The non-residential combined property tax increase for 2023 also came in lower at 1.0 per cent. The impact for a sample commercial property assessed at $1.9 million would be approximately $258 annually, or $21.50 monthly.

“Despite the inflationary times, we’ve maintained the County’s high-quality services, while keeping an eye on our long-term financial health,” says Mayor Rod Frank. "The provincial freeze on education property tax and additional growth in the County, together with Council’s continued focus on controlling costs wherever possible, have helped keep the tax impact to property owners below the rate of inflation, meaning that in real dollars taxes have decreased.”

Property tax notices will be mailed out mid-May. The tax payment deadline is Friday, June 30, 2023. Property owners are asked to call 780-464-8120 or email taxation@strathcona.ca if they do not receive their tax notice.

County Connect is also a convenient way for property owners to inquire about their assessment or property taxes.
